Leaving from Penzance harbour, there are a number of boats offering unforgettable sea-based excursions, including Marine Discovery and Mermaid Pleasure Trips. Admire views of the legendary St. Michael's Mount from a whole new perspective and take in the majesty of the sparkling blue sea rolling over the horizon. As you pootle along, keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife, including seals, dolphins, seabirds and if you are really lucky, sharks and whales too.
One of the best watersports in Mount’s Bay, diving offers a fully immersive experience where you can really explore the flipside of the sea. The ideal training ground for newbies, the bay has a depth range of 0 to 27 meters, as well as often boasting great visibility. Join experienced diver and photographer Charles Hood and explore the wrecks and reefs of West Cornwall.
Glide across the bay enjoying the rhythmic flow of your paddle pushing through the water. Cocooned in a kayak, you can bask in the glorious views of St Michaels Mount and the coast and even tuck into a picnic en route. If you don’t have your own, you can hire kayaks from local companies in Marazion and Penzance, including Ocean High.
Whether you join up with a local operator or have your own boat, Mount’s Bay is the perfect place to cruise gently along in the breeze. On calm days, drop anchor and relax on board, luxuriating in the sunshine and keeping refreshed with ice-topped drinks from the cool box.
A world of adventure awaits just offshore. Equipped with a pair of flippers, snorkel and mask, you can soar through the water, watching out for all the wild and wonderful beings who call the sea home. From darting fish to shy crabs to funny anemones, see what fascinating creatures you come across before gliding back to the beach to towel off.
Leisurely paddle or energetic surf, stand-up paddle-boarding (or SUP) is a fantastic activity. Hire a board from one of the bay’s local companies, such as The Hoxton Special or Ocean High, and see how quickly you can get to your feet, relishing the euphoria as you paddle along for the first time. If you are a seasoned pro and looking for a challenge, we hear practising yoga on paddleboards is the next big thing…
Attracting a year-round core of hardy swimmers, Mounts Bay is a beautiful spot for a refreshing dip. If you, understandably, are more of a fair-weather bather, there are lifeguards on duty between July and September, when the water is at its warmest. Grab a towel, don your cossie and let the cool waters clear your mind and soothe your soul.
Suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced windsurfers, Mount’s Bay is a tempting proposition when the conditions pick up. Although not as powerful as the north coast, jumping and wave riding can be just as much fun. To see the professionals in action, watch out for the UKWA race fleet who visit the bay every year as part of the UK tour.
