Rugby World Cup 2019
It’s a big few months ahead for rugby fans in Cornwall. In the exciting run-up to the Rugby World Cup and the start of the season for our very own Cornish Pirates, it’s all go.
Held in Asia for the first time ever, the Rugby World Cup will make history this year. Kicking off on Friday 20th September hosts Japan will take on Rugby World Cup debutants Russia in a thrilling game watched by wide-eyed supporters across the globe. With nearly 50 matches taking place between 20 nations until the final on Saturday 2nd November, it is sure to be one muddy, bloody and thoroughly captivating ride.
So what are England’s chances? Finding themselves in Pool C amongst tough competition, England will have to battle it out against firm rivals France, as well as strong competitors in the form of Argentina, Tonga and the USA. With only two teams able to move forward to the knockout stages, all eyes and hopes will be firmly pinned on Eddie Jones’ squad, keeping fingers crossed for a repeat of 2003’s victory – the last time England won the Cup.
A key date for the diary, England’s first match will take place on Sunday 22nd September against Tonga; be sure your only agenda for the day is finding a cosy pew from which to watch the game unfold! Following the first match, England will then play the USA on Thursday 26th September, Argentina on Saturday 5th October and France on Saturday 12th October. For rugby fans out there, it will certainly be an absorbing month.
If you just can’t get enough, there is even more action closer to home as our very own Cornish Pirates get underway with their season. Training from their home ground of Mennaye Field in Alexandra Road, Penzance (just 3 miles away from us at the Godolphin Arms), the Pirates will have their first game away against London Scottish on Saturday 21st September. With a steady stream of matches following on, you will have plenty of opportunities to get behind the boys and cheer them on.
